Walter Manthay Obituary

Walter R. Manthay, 96, died in the early morning hours of August 10, 2024 of heart failure at MidState Medical Center, Meriden,CT.  A native of Middletown, CT, Walter was the youngest of five children. He is survived by his wife Janet Chadbourne Manthay; daughters, Diane M. Gentile of Middletown; Dr. Nancy M. Mackowsky and her husband, Dr. Richard Mackowsky of North Carolina; grandchildren, Heather, David, Emma and Evan.   He was preceded in death by his brothers Reinhold, Theodore, Rudolph, and sister Alma.

For the first thirty years of his life, Walter worked on his family’s dairy farm.  He was hired as a machinist at Pratt & Whitney in North Haven and worked there for the next thirty years, minus one week.  He was a faithful member of the Elks Club.  He retired in 1989 leaving him with 35 more years to enjoy life gardening, playing his accordion, meeting with friends at McDonalds almost daily and taking vacations with his family.  He also loved playing checkers and would beat his grandchildren at it very often!

He almost made it to celebrate 61 years of marriage to the love of his life, Janet, wed on August 10, 1963.

A celebration and memorial service will be held at the Third Congregational Church of Middletown on Friday, August 30 at 11:00, followed by a burial at the Miner Street Cemetery, Middletown. A light lunch will be served immediately after back at the Third Congregational Church Hall. To share memories or send condolences to the family, please visit www.doolittlefuneralservice.com.
