Valerie (Lang) Butler Obituary

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Valerie L. Butler. She went to be with the Lord and her beloved husband, Benjamin Butler Jr., on July 14, 2026, at the age of 87. Valerie was born in New Haven on June 14, 1939, to the late Marion Condon and Joseph Lang. She was loved abundantly and was raised for most of her life by her stepfather, Walter Scott Condon.

She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl (Michael) Powers, Marilyn (Raymond) Powers, and Valerie Susan (Arthur) Lazzari. She was a loving grandmother to Steven (April) Ricci, Brendan (Cassandra) Ricci, Michael J. Powers, Philip (Crystal) Powers, Raymond (Stephanie) Powers, Kyle (Loren) Powers, Tyler Powers, Kayla (Josh) Jackson, and Adrianna Lazzari. She cherished her great-grandchildren, Isabella Ricci, Sina Kishore, Luna Powers, Juniper Powers, and Knox Jackson.

Valerie was predeceased by her loving husband, Benjamin Butler Jr.; her daughter, Bonnie Bartram; her son-in-law, Donald Bartram; her grandson, Robert Butler; and her three siblings, Bonnie Carroll, Phillip Lang, and Donald Lang.

Valerie was cherished by many extended family members who loved her dearly, as well as by her many beloved friends at Victory Church, where she was a longtime member.

Valerie was married to her husband, Benjamin, for 68 years. In the early years of her life, she worked for the New Haven Register. She later became a bookkeeper in the Grants and Contracts Division of the Biology Department at Yale University, from which she retired after 30 years.

In her spare time, Valerie enjoyed watching soap operas and Fox News, playing bingo, painting ceramics, and bowling with friends. She also loved golfing trips with her husband and the New Haven Fire Department’s golf league, as well as vacations with her daughters and grandchildren, where they traveled to different states and countries, had fun, and made lasting memories.
