Sandra Lee Foss

On Saturday, October 22, 2022, Sandra Foss of Middletown, CT, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones in Durham, CT at the age of 64. She was a beloved mother, sister and friend.

Sandy was born in New London, CT on January 6, 1958, the youngest of ten siblings, to the late Frederick D. Foss Sr. and Erma M. (Day) Foss. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1976. Sandy was an avid animal lover who especially enjoyed riding her horse. She also loved dogs, nature, country music, watching stock car races and vacationing in Cape Cod.

She was a dedicated state employee, serving a total of 41 years with the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services at Connecticut Valley Hospital (Middletown, CT) and Cedarcrest Hospital (Newington, CT). She began as a Medical Records Clerk at the age of 18 and worked her way up to an Administrative Assistant to the Division Director of General Psychiatry and Addiction Services until her retirement in 2017.

In 2019, Sandy was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma. She fought a courageous 3-year battle with this rare and aggressive form of cancer. Thank you to all the family, friends and medical professionals who provided support, care and comfort throughout this difficult journey. She will forever be remembered for her selflessness, dependability and perseverance. 

Sandy is survived by her two daughters, whom she loved and devoted her life to: Jennifer Marks and her significant other, Jesen “Shane” Meznarich of Durham, CT, and Michelle Marks of Middletown, CT. She is also survived by four brothers and two sisters: Frederick Foss Jr. and his wife Claudia of Twin Mountain, NH; Samuel Foss, Sr. of Middletown, CT; Lawrence Foss of Mt. Airy, NC; Robert Foss of Portland, CT; Anna Mulholland and Carol Daniels of Middletown, CT and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her brothers William Foss and John Foss, her sister Linda Spencer, and her half-sisters Shirley Butler and Joan Mackas.

      Sandy’s life will be celebrated with a graveside service in Middlefield Cemetery on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 10:30 in the morning.
