Ruth Lester Obituary

Mother Ruth Lucille (Callahan) Lester, 93, of Middletown, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Wadsworth Glen.  Born in Rome, Mississippi on May 13, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Frances (Young) Callahan.

Mother Lester attended school in Drew and Louisville, MS.  She moved to Middletown in 1962. She was employed at Best Cleaners and then went to work for the State of Connecticut from 1966 to 1986 when she retired.  Mother Lester was a member of Shiloh Baptist Missionary Church.  She joined Shiloh when the church was located in High Street, later joined Cross Street AME Zion Church and five years ago came back to Shiloh.  Christ, she served as President of the Senior Choir, member of the Gospel, Chorus, President of the Pastor’s Aide, served on the Usher Board, sung in the choir, deaconess and last served as Mother of Shiloh. Her passion in life was in her cooking especially loved making pound cake and serving people.  She loved travelling to various churches as well as she would pick up different people and bring them to church.

Mother Lester is survived by a daughter, Frances Spivey (George) of Berlin; also raising Thomas Wilson of Norwich, Sonia Ellison of Windsor, David Ellison (Elaine) of New Britain, Tina Holley of New York, Zachary Barr of Canada and Donnie Lester of Middletown; a nephew, William Winfrey of St. Louis, Missouri; a niece, Shirley Thomas of St. Louis, MO; five grandchildren, Sheila Chatfield (Phil) of Portland; Marcie Spruill of Middletown; Melissa Spruill of Middletown, Keith Davis of Cromwell and Lisa Srams of Los Angeles, CA; six great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren and her best friend, Alberta Leary.

Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Jessie Watson.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 9 at 11:00 am at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 346 Butternut Street, Middletown.  Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Family and friends may call on Monday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the church.
