Margaret Ann Sofianos LaCosta

April 2, 1959- July 26, 2026

After enduring a long and difficult battle with cancer, Margaret passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Margaret, also known as Peggy and Maggie, was born on April 2, 1959, in Hartford, CT, to Donald J. Carter and Florence O’Malley Carter. She is survived by her son Nicholas Cercone and his partner Jamie Lynn Dodge, grandson Anthony Cercone, sister Lynne Zablocki and her husband Michael, nieces Christina Lynne Gavrilis and Ariana Margaret Gavrilis, sister Cynthia Gerber, her husband David, and their sons and numerous cousins. In addition, she leaves Mary Lachona Stark and family of PA, whom she “loved as a daughter,” and her dear friends Jimmy and Cammy Morales of AZ. Her family would also like to thank the wonderful staff of The Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care for their loving support during her final days.

Margaret was a devout Catholic, a professed member of the Secular Franciscan Order (OFS), and a member of St. John Church in Cromwell. She was a lifelong learner who obtained several degrees, including a Th.D.  She was a beloved teacher and college professor in CT and AZ.

One of her strongest passions was animal rescue. She devoted the past 20 years and countless resources to find the perfect home for animals in need through her non-profit organization, The Chi Society of CT, now closed. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 3rd at 11:00 am at Saint John Church, 5 Saint John Court, Cromwell.  The service will also be livestreamed on the church’s website; SaintJohn-Cromwell.org.
