Mabel G. Hamma (Mickie) passed away peacefully at her home on December 9, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on July 4, 1936, in Middletown, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late John B. Gastler and Alice (Coe) Gastler. A lifelong resident of the town of Durham, she met and married the love of her life, the late William (Bill) Hamma in 1957 and they moved into the house they built together on Stagecoach Road in 1960. A registered nurse by profession, she was an avid historian and antiques collector/dealer and her children will tell you that they remember many vacations in Maine that also served as “antiquing” trips, a love that her husband encouraged and also participated in. Mickie was also known for her love of history. She was not only an avid genealogist who kept the Coe family records and history after her own Mother passed away, she also documented the histories of several of the original farms in town, many of which are displayed in the Farm Museum each year during the Durham Fair. Mickie is survived by her daughter Cathryn (Vincent) Melvin, her son William Jr. (Elisa) Hamma, her son James (Maria) Hamma as well as 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Harold C. Gastler and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband William R. Hamma and her daughter Carolyn (Phillip) Caffrey. Her family will miss her gentle smile and sense of humor, her penchant for anything sweet (she was always willing to share) and her deep love of her children and grandchildren, as her husband and family were the most important things to her in the world. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring at a date to be determined by her family. To share memories or send condolences to the family, please visit www.doolittlefuneralservice.com.
