Lillian M. (Sarkea) Guilmartin Obituary
Lillian M. Guilmartin passed away on July 3, 2026. She was the daughter of James Marrewa and Angles B. Marrewa. She was born on October 3, 1948, in New York City and the family settled in Springfield, Massachusetts where Lillian would go on to attend Cathedral High School. Lillian married the love of her life, Welles Guilmartin, in 1972 and enjoyed 53 years of marriage. Lillian was generous, successful, and a fighter who loved her family completely. She loved to travel with Welles, read, did sudoku, cheered on UCONN Women’s Basketball and rooted for her New York Yankees. She had many friends she considered family. After graduating from UMASS Amherst with a BA in accounting in 1971, Lillian passed her CPA exam and was hired by the international firm, Peat, Marwick & Mitchell (now KPMG). She advanced to be the first woman in management in the Hartford office. After a few years she realized she couldn’t raise a family the way she wanted to at the large firm and she left in 1977. She and Welles cofounded Guilmartin & Guilmartin that year in Middletown (now Guilmartin, DiPiro & Sokolowski). At the time the firm was the only known husband wife firm in the United States. Years later, she left the accounting firm to work for Connecticut Underwriters, a company she eventually bought with two of her coworkers. She retired in 2013 to spend more time with Welles and travel the world with him. As a mother, Lillian was immensely devoted and involved with the activities of her sons: Ryan and Cullen, whether it was academics, band, activities, or sports. She ensured her sons had a wonderful childhood and was a regular at their concerts, games and sporting events through college. She adored her grandchildren: Kelsey, Maddie, Dylan and Miko. Lee was especially proud of her Spanish and Lebanese heritage and was fluent in Spanish and enjoyed her many trips to Spain to visit family. Lillian was a quiet philanthropist. She generously gave to numerous charities but was especially concerned with the missions of Amazing Grace Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, the Middlesex Community Foundation and the Middlesex County Historical Society. Lillian is survived by her husband Welles, two children, and four grandkids who love, admire and will miss her more than words can express. A celebration of life will be held on August 29, 2026, at 11AM at South Congregational Church in Middletown with a reception to follow. Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to the Middlesex County Historical Society, at 151 Main Street in Middletown, Connecticut 06457.
