With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joyce A. Owen, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Joyce was born on April 18, 1941, in Hartford, CT, to Wallace A. and Christine M. Barile Bragdon. She grew up in Rocky Hill before moving to Ellington, where she graduated from Rockville High School in 1959. Joyce lived in Cromwell, CT, since 1987, where she and her husband owned Video Gallery and prior to that, she raised her family in Stafford Springs, CT. As a teenager, Joyce loved music, dancing, and Elvis Presley—until she met her true king, Robert D. Owen, at the Crystal Lake Ballroom in Ellington in 1960. They were married the following year on September 23, 1961, and built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Bob predeceased her on April 21, 2018, and not a day went by that Joyce didn’t carry him in her heart. Joyce’s talents were as diverse as her heart was big. She could knit, crochet, quilt, and decorate cakes with remarkable skill. But above all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren, who brought her immense joy—her “DaniBanani” held a particularly special place in her heart. Known for her kindness and generosity, Joyce maintained friendships that dated back to her school days and brought light into the lives of all who knew her.
She leaves behind her loving son, Clinton T. Owen, and his wife, Laura, of Mashpee, MA; her devoted daughter, Maureen Owen, and her boyfriend, Sal Scalora; her treasured grandchildren, Danielle M. Owen of Weymouth, MA, Alexander R. Owen of Winthrop, MA, and Rachel E. Owen of Mashpee, MA; and her great-grandchildren, Sean (S.J.) and Grace. Joyce is also survived by her step-grandchildren, Michael Scalora, wife, Nichole, and their children, Lucas and Logan, of East Hartford, CT, and Nikki Scalora of Torrington, CT. Joyce is further survived by her loving sister, Irene J. Schneider of Brooklyn, CT, whom she talked to nearly every day, as well as her many cousins, nieces, nephews and her numerous friends.
The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all of Joyce’s wonderful caregivers from Assisted Living Home Care Services of Cheshire, as well as her dedicated final caregivers from Caregiving by Kathy. Their exceptional care, compassion, and the friendships they shared with Joyce meant so much to her and to all of us. A special thanks goes to Kathy Lundell of Caregiving by Kathy for the extraordinary support and kindness she showed to Joyce and our family during her final weeks. Her unwavering dedication brought comfort and peace during this difficult time, and we are forever grateful.
