Mother Johnnie Mae (Dunson) Carter, age 89, went to be with the Lord on September 16, 2024. She was born to the late Reverend Alexander (Minnie) Dunson in Lynch, Kentucky on March 23, 1935, and she completed her high school education later in life.
Mother Carter was one of eleven children and is survived by two children, Arthur Lee Carter and Phyllis Denise Russell, both from New London, CT; one brother Isaiah (Wallena) Dunson of Texas; and a host of nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well.
Mother Carter served as a Deaconess at the Open Door Missionary Baptist Church. Mother Carter worked at Saint John Day Care in Brooklyn, NY as a Teacher’s Aide, when she relocated back to New London, CT in 1980, she was employed by Blackburn for many years.
Mother Carter loved loving people. Mother Carter lived a life deeply devoted to the teachings and guidance of the Lord Jesus Christ. Every decision and action was influenced by a profound faith, demonstrating love, compassion, and service to others. She also loved to travel. She never met a stranger. She always had a smile and an encouraging word for everyone.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 27th at 11:00 am in Pine Grove Cemetery, 857 South Main Street, Middletown. A memorial service will be held after the graveside service at Open Door Missionary Baptist Church, 76 High Street, Middletown.
