John Young Obituary

 

John Ames Young of Cromwell beloved husband of Emilia (Millie Gallo) Young, passed away peacefully at home on May 14, 2025.

John was born at the Crossing Hospital in Meriden on April 29, 1937, the 3rd of six children of the late Joseph and Catherine (Ames) Young. He was a parishioner at St. John's Church in Cromwell where he was a daily attendee at mass as well as an usher. He was married for 57 years to his wonderful wife Millie who he loved with all his heart and soul. John also had two daughters and three beautiful grandchildren that were the "apple of his eye!" 

John was raised as a devout Catholic and attended St. Rose School in Meriden, graduating in 1950. He was a proud graduate of the Meriden High School class of 1954. He was manager of the football team for 3 years and an active member of the class reunion committee and never missed a reunion. He would always greet his classmates with a friendly "Remember the red and blue"

John went on to work as a lab technician at American Cyanamid (Cytec Industries) in Wallingford retiring in 1995 after 40 years of dedicated service. John was best known in Meriden for his participation in sports. He took pride in his sports writing, coaching and helping youngsters along the way. He coached for 18 years. In the Meriden Cuno basketball league, he was also affiliated with many softball teams including the Maryland Falcons, McConnell's Larks, Chadwick Construction (10-time New England champions) and was manager for many years for the "Woodbees" in the Meriden Softball League, sponsored by his dear friends, Tony and Lucille Julius. John was also associated with the Meriden Merchants Baseball Team and Laurel College in Meriden Titans basketball teams.

John was a resident of Wallingford for 30 years, a lifetime member and past president of our Lady of Fatima Men's Club, an organization he truly loved. John was a long-time member of the Meriden Sports Reunion Committee and was honored as a sportsman of distinction in 2006 by the committee. John was also an avid golfer and bowler, spending many a Friday night at T-Bowl Lanes in Wallingford with his bowling league buddies.

 Along with his wife, Millie, John is survived by his two daughters, Dr. Patricia Carlson and husband Jim of Middletown and Kellie-Ann Summa and husband Jeffrey of Kensington and beloved grandchildren, John and Danny Carlson and Kathy Lucille Summa. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

John was pre-deceased by his sister Katherine (Kitsy) Pallis, his brother Francis Young, his other sisters Maureen Schappert and Roseanne Gardon of Meriden CT, and his brother Joseph Young and his wife Dorothy of Middletown CT. He was also pre deceased by dear Aunt, Rose Gallo and her husband Mickey.

Family and friends may call on Friday May 23rd from 9:00 to 10:30 am at the Cromwell Funeral Home, 506 Main Street, Cromwell.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11:00 am at Saint John Church, 5 Saint John Court, Cromwell.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
