Gaia Barbara McDermott

Gaia Barbara McDermott, 54, of Cromwell, CT passed away unexpectedly in her home on April 22, 2023.  She was born in New Haven, CT on April 28, 1968. She is survived by her son Luke McDermott Grandpre of Rockfall, her father Michael McDermott of Wallingford, sisters Irene Jackson and her husband, Allen of Madison, Maureen Parente and her husband, Paul of Wallingford and brother Brian McDermott and his wife, Donna of Avon along with several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles & cousins both in Connecticut and in Ireland and too many friends to count.

Gaia was in her 14th year working at the CT General Assembly. She began working for the House Democrats and most recently with the Senate Democrats. She was a proud member of the Cromwell Democratic Town Committee and was elected to a term on the Cromwell Board of Education. She enjoyed a good debate and was passionate on issues she cared about, she was always a champion for the underdog. Throughout her life, Gaia enjoyed spending her time being active in political and social issues.  Additionally, Gaia organized the Couch to 5k, Winter Warriors and the "CGA Challengers" at the State Capital.  She would always be there to lend support to anyone and everyone. She had a thirst for knowledge and a desire to find meaning in life. She created a podcast called Face the Sun, in which she searched for answers about how we can find and build community through and outside of religion. She was a member of the Irish American Home Society of Glastonbury and incredibly proud of her Irish heritage. Gaia was a great storyteller and could easily make those around her laugh. She had an infectious smile and warmth that brightened people's day.

Gaia was predeceased by her mother Freda McDermott and her infant brother Gerard.

A wake honoring Gaia’s life will be held on Friday, May 12th, at the Cromwell Funeral Home, located at 506 Main St, Cromwell, CT 06416, from 5 PM to 8 PM.
