Elizabeth Scott (Butterworth) Baker

Elizabeth Scott Baker, beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 17, 2026, at her home in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Born June 7, 1960, in Middletown Connecticut, Beth was the eldest daughter of Jeremy J. Butterworth and Selina Scott Butterworth. Known for her love of life, and infectious laughter, she filled every room with love and fun.

Born and raised in Middletown, Beth graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. With a love of the outdoors, nurtured by her annual family camping trips, she headed to the Adirondacks to study geology at St. Lawrence University, earning a BS. During her years in upstate New York, she forged strong friendships and treasured memories that stuck with her for the rest of her life.

 After college, Beth returned to the Middletown area, taking a job at Aetna where she had a long, distinguished career, eventually retiring as Director of Pensions Actuarial in 2023.   During those years she was married, divorced and had two children, Dan and Katie, whom she loved dearly. She ably balanced her full-time job with making sure Dan and Katie’s childhoods were full of music, camping (of course), and family traditions. Raising Fidelco puppies as a 4H project and encouraging musical talent with classes at the Hartt School of Music were among the many opportunities she made sure her kids enjoyed.

A dyed-in-the-wool New Englander, Beth loved early morning swims in the Atlantic, reveling in the first falling snowflakes each season, and trips to the shore any time of the year. She was an accomplished gardener, loving her time planning, planting, and harvesting the impressive garden plot she shared with her sister, Kathy. Camping and traveling were always in the works with her sister, Karen, as well as her children, grandchildren and nieces.

Beth embraced her title of “Grammy” with full commitment, blocking her calendar to fly in for all birthdays and many days of fun. She made sure her two granddaughters learned the art of puddle stomping, beach loving, and general mischief-making. Beth adored sharing meals, stories, and laughter with friends and family, as well as baking her famous homemade pies (she was a master of many flavors, from apple to mincemeat, and lemon chiffon). She loved being on the water and for many years was a member of Central Connecticut Rowing. She was also an accomplished knitter, a fierce lover of people, and by all accounts, she was always the life of the party.

Beth was predeceased by her mother, Annette. She is survived by her father, Jeremy of Middletown, her two sisters, Kathy Butterworth (of Vernon) and Karen, children, Dan (of Greenfield, MA) and Katie (of Sarasota, FL), and her grandchildren, Layla and Selena. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 11th at Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church Street, Middletown, CT. Calling hour is from 10-11am and the service is 11-12pm, with a reception to follow.
