Donald Edward Smith

Donald Edward Smith, 78, of Cromwell, CT and formerly of Marlborough, CT and Raynham, MA, passed away at Pilgrim Manor with his family by his side on December 2, 2025, following a brief illness.
    

Born in Boston, MA on May 7, 1947, he was the son of the late Charles and Dorothy (Chubb) Smith. An alumnus of Tufts University, he married Mary Nitchie Smith in 1968. The couple moved to Loudonville, New York for a time and later settled in Marlborough, where they made their home for nearly twenty years. After that, they relocated to Raynham, MA where they spent 18 years before returning to Colchester. After Mary’s passing in 2016, he moved to Covenant Living of Cromwell in 2021.

Don spent his entire career in banking, specializing in corporate trust. He retired from State Street Bank & Trust Company in 2003 and U.S. Bank in 2008. He volunteered with the Marlborough Volunteer Fire Department as Rescue Captain and as an EMT. Since 2022, Don had faithfully served the Cromwell Fire District as Fire Commissioner. He also volunteered on various committees at Covenant Living, including the Dining and Facilities Committees. Don will be remembered for his positive attitude, guidance, professionalism, and dedication to public service, but most importantly for the love and devotion he gave to his family.

Don leaves behind son Daryl Smith and his wife Kendra, and two grandchildren, Wendy and Daniel of Middletown, and numerous extended family members and friends.
     

A memorial service will be held on January 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Covenant Living, 101 West Street, Cromwell, CT 06416.
