Charles John Cubeta

On December 4, 2019, Charles J. Cubeta sat in his living room chair for his afternoon nap and quietly joined his wife Harriet in eternal peace and paradise. He was born July 30, 1927 to the Honorable Salvatore Cubeta, past Mayor of Middletown, and Marion (Bacon) Cubeta. He was a World War II veteran and a graduate of the UConn School of Agriculture.

In his early years he lived two lives. First, in town, as the son of a Sicilian businessman and politician, then, in the country, as the son and grandson of the Bacon family farm in Westfield. He spent many years on the farm and went to UConn school of Agriculture to follow in the footsteps of past Bacon generations going all the way back to the original settlers of Middletown where the King of England gave the Bacon family a land grant for the farm and lands in Westfield. Charles remained in the dairy business for many years as a milkman. Upon retirement he and his wife Harriet spent much time traveling and seeing the country in their Airstream. I believe this was one of the happiest times in his life. He loved camping and being with his camping partners and traveling this great country. There was not a campfire made that he did not enjoy. He loved to cross country ski. He and Harriet would set up winter camp up north every year to hike and ski. He was an avid gardener and won a Durham fair blue ribbon one year for one of his giant pumpkins. He also loved UConn women’s basketball, the Yankees, playing golf, and a good cigar.

He leaves behind his daughter, Karen Cubeta of Pennsylvania, along with her children David, Sarah, and Emily, their spouses and their children, his son, Charles (Chick) Cubeta Jr. and daughter in law Florentina Cubeta of Middletown along with grandchildren Haruki and Sachi Cubeta-Yonamine and his sister Jeanne Shatzman of Florida.

Charles had a deep love for his family and his country. He was a good father, a naturalist, a keen historian and spent most of his life outdoors in the wonderment of nature and a respect of this planet we live on. He was our hero. His life was a job well done. We will miss him and hold him eternal in our hearts.
