It is with deep sadness we share that Caroline Mary (Wimler) Norton passed away from this life on June 24, 2024.
Caroline (“Grammy”) will always be remembered for her quiet nature, deep devotion to family and love of animals, especially her little dog “K.D.”. Caroline was born August 23, 1935, and grew up on the Wimler family farm in Durham, CT. On September 29, 1956, Caroline married the love of her life, Ralph R. Norton. Together they raised two children, Kenneth Dean Norton and Barbara Jean (Norton) Litwin. A special time in their life was when they moved to Fisher’s Island for Ralph to supervise the building of the Island’s school. They made friends and memories that they cherished for the rest of their lives.
Caroline was dedicated to her family, bringing over coffee and the paper on Sunday mornings, driving around on Christmas Eve looking at lights, having sleepovers, swimming in the pond, playing rummy and checkers. Grammy was a bit of a prankster and liked to have fun – putting hard boiled eggs under the hens, painting the tip of a cat’s tail. She will always hold a special place in our hearts for her ginormous root beer floats, hanging tea bags on lights, picking your own peaches - coming out with 50 lbs instead 10 lbs, drinking maple syrup just for fun. Caroline will also be remembered for her famous homemade breads, cheesecake, sticky buns and seafood casserole.
Caroline enjoyed crocheting in her spare time, making bedspread sized afghans for each of her 7 grandchildren. When she wasn’t crocheting for family, she was making preemie baby hats and prayer shawls. Caroline was especially proud of winning Best of Show when she entered her blankets in the Durham Fair.
Caroline is predeceased by her husband, Ralph R. Norton, son Kenneth D Norton, several brothers and a sister. She is survived by her daughter Barbara (Norton) Litwin and her husband Michael, grandchildren Amanda, Kevin, Justin, Jay, Brandon, Alyson, Ryan, one great grandchild, Patrick, a brother, Lawrence H. Wimler and a daughter-in-law, Wendy A. Norton.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 3rd, at 11:00 am. in Mica Hill Cemetery in Durham.
Grammy ended every phone call with “here’s a hug for you”. Grammy, here is one for you. We will miss you.
