Carl Calhoun, Sr. Obituary

Carl A. Calhoun Sr., 88, of Middletown, husband of the late Helen Connelly Calhoun, passed away at his home surrounded by his children on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. A lifelong resident of Middletown, Carl was born on November 1, 1931 to the late Albert F. and Frances S. (Carlson) Calhoun.

A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School (Class of 1949), he served in the USMC from 1952 - 1955. He worked as an installer and lineman for the Southern New England Telephone Company until he retired in 1989. Carl was married to Helen for 39 years until she passed in 1995. Carl kept busy throughout his retirement helping his family and friends…..especially his children and grandchildren. Carl was a member of the Middletown Elks Club and a parishioner at St Francis of Assisi Church.

Carl is survived by son, Carl Jr and his wife, Sue of Higganum, son, Kevin of Cromwell, daughter, Eileen Costa and her husband, Kevin of Deep River and daughter-in-law, Sue Calhoun of Rocky Hill and his companion of over 20 years, Barbara Brainerd of Middletown. In addition, he leaves behind his brother, Edward Calhoun and his wife, Carolyn of Granby, CT and his sister, Joan Rawlings of San Diego, CA., and seven grandchildren, Brian Calhoun and his wife, Natassja, Kara Calhoun and her fiancé, Michael Cronin, Stephanie Calhoun, Kevin Calhoun, Danny Calhoun and his wife, Valerie, Kailey Costa and Nick Costa. He also leaves behind two great grandchildren, Preston and Tiana Calhoun, and many nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents and wife, he was predeceased by siblings Albert, Alice (Lorraine) Moffat, Ethel Konesky, Florence Howell and George Calhoun.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 11, 2019 at 8:00 A.M. from the Doolittle Funeral Home 14 Old Church Street, Middletown followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 A.M. at Notre Dame Church, 272 Main Street, Durham, CT. Burial with military honors will follow at St John’s Cemetery.

Friends and relatives may call at the Funeral Home Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M.

Carl’s family would like to thank Middlesex Hospital Hospice and angel, Alverene Brown who helped us through his illness. Special thanks go out to Carl’s friends at “Dennys” and to co-workers and longtime friends, Dave and Ray, for their faithful visits while he was homebound and especially to Barbara for always being there for “Dad” and for us and our children.
