Anthony John Matthews

Anthony John Matthews, 79, of Portland, husband of Agnes (Himmel) Matthews for forty years, passed away on February 27, 2020 at Hartford Hospital.  Born in Liverpool, England, he was the son of the late John H. and Patricia A. (Murphy) Matthews.

Anthony was proud to be the project manager on the construction of the Portland Library as well as working on many projects in Charlotte, NC, New York City and Chicago, IL.  He was a loving husband, father and Papa, who was very caring and giving of his time.  Anthony thought very highly of all of his Atrium family.

Besides his wife, Anthony is survived by a son, Michael A. Matthews and his wife Tiffany of Lancaster, NY, a step-son Bruce G. Spencer and his wife Cindy of Concord, NC; a daughter Brenda L. Chattin of Pawcatuck, a step-daughter Elizabeth A. Stielau and her husband William M. of Middletown; two brothers, Peter Matthews of Plantsville and Paul Matthews of Simsbury; two sisters, Petrella Pope of England and Jacqueline Carey of Wethersfield and seven grandchildren, Grace, Alec, Victoria, Nathan, Breanna, Braden and Colin.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 10:00 am at Faith Lutheran Church, 300 Washington Street, Middletown.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
