The family of the Rev. Dr. Charles John Duey, Sr., better known as Chuck, announces his death on March 7, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor (Johnson) Peterson Duey. They were married for 40 years and lived in West Hartford, Newington, and most recently, among friends and colleagues at Covenant Village of Cromwell, Connecticut.
Chuck was previously married to Alice E. Lindquist, from Youngstown, Ohio, who died in West Hartford, CT, in 1977. He and Alice had three children: Cheryl A. Duey (James Ingala) of East Haddam, CT; Charles, John, Jr. (Tara Webb) of Glenside, PA; and Craig Wm. (Bonny Lynch) of Farmington, CT.
In 1978, Eleanor and her two daughters joined the family: Jeanne Peterson (Steve Zieger) of Avon, CT; and Karen Peterson (Mark McNamara) of Houston, TX. All the children and extended family have been a wonderful and caring family. In addition, there are nine grandchildren and four great-granddaughters.
A native of Miami, Florida, Chuck lost his mother when he was eight years old. He grew up in the company of his father, sister, brother, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Chuck was in the U. S. Navy for five years, serving in various places, from San Diego to Norfolk. He sailed as far east as Istanbul and south to Panama, where he visited relatives. He spent a year at Guantanamo Bay, where he studied Spanish. He then majored in the language at the University of Miami. From there, he and Alice travelled across the country to Los Angeles, where he went to Fuller Seminary and they worked in Spanish churches. From there they went to Chicago, where he was ordained in the Evangelical Covenant Church. As missionaries, they worked for a year in Alaska and later in Ecuador for eight years. While working in the education system, they also established a new congregation in Guayaquil, which went on to become a national Covenant church. It celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016.
In 1967, Chuck received a call to be the pastor of the Covenant Congregational Church of West Hartford and served there for 20 years. He also held membership in the United Church of Christ, where he served four churches as interim minister in Newington, Stratford, Cheshire, and East Hartford.
Across the years, he graduated from the University of Miami, FL; Fuller Seminary (M.Div.); Princeton Seminary (Th.M.); and Andover Newton Seminary (D.Min.). He continued to study and write his entire life.
Chuck cared deeply about social justice, lived his principles and led a value driven life.
