Obituary for Una Maud Muirhead Chambers

Mother Una Maud Muirhead Chambers, of Portland, CT passed away peacefully on Monday, November 6, 2017 at Middlesex Hospital, Middletown, CT. Mother Chambers was born to the late Azariah and Albertha (King) Muirhead on May 7, 1935 in Bartons St. Catherine, Jamaica.

Mother Chambers was a gifted dressmaker designing clothes without using a pattern and sewing by hand. She created outfits for her daughters and their friends, and she enjoyed making clothes for others.

Mother Chambers was a faithful member of True Vine Holiness Church, Portland, CT for many years. She was the “Song Bird” of True Vine Holiness Church and her voice will be missed by everyone. Mother Chambers also taught the youths of the Church how to sew by hand and she was always ready to impart words of wisdom to those that seek her advice. Mother Chambers touched the lives of everyone she met with her kindness and generosity. For four years, Mother Chambers honored the Portland Firefighters in recognition of the firefighters that lost their lives in the 911 attack.

She is survived by her devoted husband of fifty-six years Deacon Leroy Chambers (Daddy). Six sons, Derrick Lawrence, Sr., Horace (Nadine) Chambers, Sr., both of Middletown, Charles Chambers of Florida, Larkland (Angella) Chambers, Donovan (Paulette) Samuels both of Middletown and Osbert Dorma of Michigan; four daughters, Dayon Chambers of Middletown, Judith (Michael) Chambers Able of Florida, Aneita (Lloyd) Chambers Francis and Sylvia Barrett both of Jamaica, four brothers Calvin, Albert and Edgar Muirhead, all of Jamaica and Leslie Muirhead of England; three brothers- in- law Thomas Rose, Denniston Williamson and Jerome Rose, two sisters- in- law Ulalee and Deloris Rose; twenty-two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.

Special mention: Suzette Thompson McKenzie, Michelle Rose-Nathan, Beverly Chambers, Tikyra Leary, nurses and staff of DaVita Pdi-Middlesex Dialysis Center of Middletown, CT.

Besides her parents, Mother Chambers was predeceased by her son, Stanish Chambers and three sisters, Miriam Muirhead, Enid Muirhead and Verna Muirhead Houlker.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 17 at 11:00 am at Cross Street A.M.E. Zion Church, 440 West Street, Middletown. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
