Obituary for Stephen Michael Barber

Stephen M. Barber of Cromwell and Middletown died July 11, 2017 in Reno, NV of natural causes.

Mr. Barber is survived by his loved ones: sons, Michael and Jason; brother, Joel; sister-in-law, Ja-non; niece and nephew, Sydney and Ethan; his ex-wife, Charlene; and far too many close friends to name.

Born and raised in Middletown, he was a lifelong area resident, having spent most of his adult years residing in Cromwell. After attending high school in Middletown, Mr. Barber attended college at Uconn, Hofstra, and Southern Connecticut State University. He was a graduate of the Vermont School of Law.

In the early 1980s, Mr. Barber opened a small law firm in Cromwell which served the legal needs of area residents for most of the past 40 years. He was also active in local Cromwell politics where Mr. Barber served several terms as a town selectman and on the board of education where he also served as chairman. While on the board of education, Mr. Barber established a scholarship fund that aided local students with the financial burdens of college. Mr. Barber was also a candidate for state representative and was a former member of the board of the Adath Israel Synagogue in Middletown, where his family were active members for generations.

Mr. Barber had a passion for literature, history, travel, the Red Sox, and seafood. His passion for good music and fresh coffee was better described as an obsession. He had a penchant for lending advice and using famous (or obscure) quotes to help make that advice more clear and personal. He had an amazing sense of humor, loved marathon viewings of television shows and movies, and was a truly loyal and steadfast friend. He was taken from us far too soon and his loss will be felt deeply by his family and friends.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 24th at 10:00 am in Adath Israel Cemetery, 714 Pine Street, Middletown. Please omit flowers, donations in Stephen’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.
