Obituary for Sheila Gartner Saxe

Sheila Gartner Saxe, 70, of Magnolia, Delaware, wife of Philip D. Saxe for forty-eight years, passed away on September 10, 2017 at Milford Memorial Hospital in DE. Born on October 14, 1946 in Hartford, she was the daughter of late Paul and Ruth (Rosen) Gartner.

Along with Phil, Sheila is survived by her brother, William S. Gartner of Plainville, CT.
Sheila was a graduate of Connard High School in West Hartford and went on to earn a BA in English from Boston University and a Masters in Career Counseling from Saint Joseph’s in West Hartford. Sheila earned a CLU while selling life insurance for several years. She resided in Wethersfield, CT for some thirty-five years where she owned and operated Innovative Support Services, Inc. (word processing, career counseling and resume writing).

She volunteered at the Wethersfield Historical Society enjoying most the tours she conducted of the Hurlbut-Dunham House. Her fondest childhood memory was feeding the ducks at Keeney Pond in Hartford. Prior to current dog, Sandy (a Yorkie), she was owned by three dachshunds and never missed an opportunity to meet a new dog. Sheila always felt she was owned by her pets. She was a member of Congregation Adath Israel in Middletown, CT where she was a life member of Hadassah and of Seaside Jewish Community in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Because of her support of Phil's Rotary activities Sheila was made a Paul Harris Fellow.
She has been active in FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered a group dedicated to education and support of people with hereditary cancer (BRCA). Upon diagnosis with a BRCA positive cancer Sheila participated in many community and UCONN Health Center education opportunities.

Thanks to Dr. Molly Brewer and her staff at UCONN Cancer Center for Sheila’s eleven years post diagnosis and great appreciation to the doctors, nursing staff, custodial and culinary support people, and especially the Cancer Center and the Chaplin (Dr. Paul Isaacs) of Bayhealth in DE for making Sheila's last days comfortable.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 13 at 1:00 p.m. at Congregation Adath Israel Synagogue, 8 Broad Street, Middletown. Burial will follow in Adath Israel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to FORCE, 16057 Tampa Palms Blvd. W, PMB #373 Tampa, FL 33647 or Congregation Adath Israel Synagogue, P.O. Box 337, Middletown, CT 06457.
