Obituary for Katherine Marguerite Donohue

Katherine Marguerite Donohue, 55, of Cromwell, passed away at home on Sunday, September 24, 2017 due to complications from ALS. Born in Middletown, she was the daughter of Richard Wm. Donohue of Cromwell and the late Lois Ann (Franklin) Donohue.

Kathy graduated from Cromwell High School, Class of 1980 and was a life member of the Cromwell Historical Society. She worked as a therapeutic recreation director & long term care specialist for thirty-six years, most recently at Heritage Commons Retirement Community and previously at the Day Club. She also worked as an advocate with the State of Connecticut to bring awareness of the value and importance of adult day service centers, was a member of the Connecticut Association of Therapeutic Recreation Directors, President of the Connecticut Association of Adult Day Service from 2010-2011 and member of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Associations of Therapeutic Recreation Directors and served as President in 1999. Kathy’s work was marked by an uncanny ability to comfort the elderly, the ill, and the infirm.

Kathy was a soloist with the New England Chamber Choir, Saint Peter Church Choir and at numerous weddings throughout Connecticut. She enjoyed traveling with her mother to Europe and New York City with regular visits to the World Trade Center site. She also loved to read extensively literature of all genres, proctored numerous book clubs throughout her life, and followed her beloved Red Sox of whom she was a lifelong fan. Kathy had an eye for beauty, obvious to anyone who entered a room or sat at a holiday table which she had decorated.

From the onset of her disease, Kathy exemplified courage, strength, and perseverance. When her condition worsened earlier this year, she became determined to spend her last summer at home, which she was able to do because of a vast network of dear and special relationships developed throughout her professional and personal life. “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”

Along with her father, Kathy is survived by her siblings, Linda M. Donohue, Robert L. Donohue and his wife, Jennifer, and Richard F. Donohue and his wife, Rebecca Bayreuther Donohue; nephews and niece, Patrick and Kathryn Goldner, Ryan and his wife, Stephanie and
Carlton Donohue; great nephews and niece, Cassius, Sullivan and Billie Donohue; sister-in-law Christine Donohue and partner, Mary; and her cat, Heffey.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 3 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Peter’s Church, 30 Saint Peter Lane, Higganum. Burial will follow in Cromwell Hillside Cemetery West.
