Obituary for Katherine Ann Ewald Nielsen

Katherine “Kae” Ewald Nielsen, 93 of Cromwell passed peacefully at home on October 9, 2017.
She was the beloved wife of the late Howard F. Nielsen, Sr. Kae was born in Middletown CT on March 27, 1924 to the late Anna (Kelley) and William T. Ewald. After graduating from Middletown High School in 1942, Kae went to work for Prudential in Hartford and attended night classes at Hillyer College.

Kae and Howard, lifelong residents of Cromwell were high school sweethearts and married after Howards return from the Pacific Theater in WWII. Growing up on Court Street, they then built their home and raised their family there. Kae dedicated her life to her family. She was an active member of St. Johns Church and the Women’s Guild, Scouting and the Cromwell Rose Town Square Dancers. Once her kids were grown, she also volunteered for the American Red Cross, was a member and longtime treasurer for the Friends of the Belden Library, and an active member of TOPS. She enjoyed being active and was a member of the YMCA for several years. She could be seen sledding down Moose’s hill or skating with the kids and later riding bikes around town with Howard, and cross-country skiing. Kae loved her gardens and passing along plants for others to enjoy.

In addition to her husband, Kae was predeceased by her son, Niel Nielsen. She is survived by four children; two daughters, Chris Williams (Simsbury) and Beth Nielsen (Middletown), and two sons Mark Nielsen (Jupiter, FL) and Howard Nielsen, Jr (Cromwell) and daughter-in-law, Leslie Nielsen (Ione, CA). Five grandchildren, Daniel Nielsen, Matthew Carling (Jen), Emily Noel (Nigel), Bill Williams, Stephanie Cilley (Mike), and three great-grandchildren Jordyn Kneeland, Avery Cilley and Maria Noel.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank Naomi Harris for the wonderful care and companionship she provided mom.
