Obituary for Joseph Salvatore Formica, Jr.

Joseph Salvatore Formica Jr., 33, of East Haddam, a loving father, devoted husband, gifted athlete and avid outdoorsman, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018.

He was the beloved husband and best friend of Shaun Marie (Raymond) Formica and the proud father of Giovanni Joseph Formica, and the son of Joseph S. Formica, Sr. of Middletown and Heidi Fields-DiNino of Old Lyme. Joe's overwhelming pride and joy in Giovanni was evident to all who knew him, and he was a loving father who couldn't help but beam with pride over his son's every move.

Joe, or Joey as he was known to friends and family, was kind, generous and caring, with a big contagious smile for all those he met. Born in Middletown, he spent most of his life there, but loved spending summers at the warm sandy beaches of Old Lyme where his natural charisma made him a friend to all. Joe graduated from Xavier High School, Class of 2002, where his athletic talents propelled him to star linebacker, All Conference Linebacker and Allstate Honorable Mention, and his natural leadership skills led him to team captain. He is a graduate of Southern Connecticut State University and worked as a Mental Health Assistant with the state Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services' Whiting Forensic Division of Connecticut Valley Hospital.

Since early childhood, Joe loved the outdoors, whether the opening day of fishing in the spring or nestled in a duck blind deep in the woods of winter. Joe marveled at the natural beauty of Connecticut's forests, fields and shoreline, which he knew so well, and he looked forward to sharing his love of nature with his young son Giovanni.

Joe was also a devoted husband to Shaun, the love of his life. Both met as young teenagers, and they knew their bond was their destiny and that their time together was meant to build their love, deepen their friendship, and nurture their Giovanni, the light of their life.

Joe's warm smile, his open heart, his genuine affection for family and friends and his sincere, caring ways will be missed by all who knew him. But his love for Shaun, for Giovanni and for his family will be eternal.

Along with his parents, wife, and son, Joe is survived by his stepfather, Dino DiNino of Old Lyme; stepmother Kristin Formica of Middletown; his in-laws, John and Lisa Raymond of East Hampton; two brothers, Christopher Dasconio and his wife Erin of Boynton Beach, FL, and Jonathan Formica of Middletown; three sisters, Brittany Maruca and her husband Frank, Samantha Formica, and Addison Formica, all of Middletown; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Stephanie and Dominic Tarquinio of Lebanon along with their son, Joe's Godson, Nico Tarquinio; nephews Alesandro Maruca and Stefano Maruca of Middletown; niece Arian Silas of Berlin; grandparents Roland and Gladys Fields of Middletown; Goddaughter Mikayla Rose Farnell and her parents J.P. and Ashley Farnell of Lyman, SC; and extended family and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 27 at 10:00 am at Saint John Church, 5 Saint John Court, Cromwell. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Family and friends may call on Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Cromwell Funeral Home, 506 Main Street, Cromwell. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe's memory may be made to an account set up for Giovanni J. Formica's care at Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, 1055 Hartford Turnpike, Waterford, CT, 06385.
