Obituary for Joel Robert Pear

Joel Robert Pear died surrounded by friends and loved ones in his home on December 12, 2017 in Middletown due to complications following ALS. He was 76.

Mr. Pear was born on July 23, 1941 in Hartford, CT to his parents, the late Michael and Celia (Zavodnick) Pear. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1959. As a young adult, he started work at EIS in Middletown honing his skills as a machinist. Joel entered his machinist apprenticeship at Pratt and Whitney in Middletown. He remained there for 40 plus years until he retired.

His love for mechanical engineering stemmed from his younger days living on the farm in Moodus and working on tractors. This led to him being an avid drag racer as a young adult designing and building his own dragster. This passion continued with his love for classic automobiles. As an adult, Mr. Pear was a member of many classic car enthusiast organizations. The only thing he loved more than classic cars was his friends and family.

Mr. Pear is survived his beloved wife of 35 years, Elizabeth (Hueg) Pear and his children Jason Tyler, Daniel Pear, Elise Foster, Marc Pear, and Michelle Friel. He has seven loving grandchildren, Morgan, Hunter, Joseph, Kaleb, Jacob, John and Emma. He is also survived by his elder brother and friend, Morton Pear.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek, 55 East Kings Highway, Chester followed by a burial in Rodfe Zedek Cemetery on Leesville Rd, Moodus. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joel’s life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the ALS Association Connecticut Chapter, 4 Oxford Rd Unit E4, Milford, CT 06460. Arrangements are being handled by Doolittle Funeral Home of Middletown. To share memories or send condolences to the family, please visit
