Obituary for Burnice Althea Mantie

Burnice Althea (Hawley) Mantie, 97, of Middletown, beloved wife of the late Clayton W. Mantie for sixty-eight years, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Wadsworth Glen. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Doris (Terrill) Hawley.

Burnice lived in Middletown most of her life, graduating Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1938 and graduated Middletown Business College. She worked in the Tax Collector’s Office, Hazen’s Book Store, Valley Oil Company and Bunces. Burnice was a member of Third Congregational Church where she taught Sunday school, played the organ, was a member of the choir, the Ladies Aide, and worked the Strawberry Shortcake Festival. She also played the organ for church weddings while she and Clayton sang. Burnice was an enthusiastic volunteer of several organizations including Westfield Colony Club, driving for the American Red Cross and was involved in the Heritage Commons Community. She was an avid gardener who loved flowers and watching for her favorite bird, the Cardinal. Burnice will be remembered as a devoted wife and a wonderful mother.

Burnice is survived by four children; Sandra Wamester and her husband, Andrew of Middletown, Robert “Bob” Mantie and his wife, Gail of Fort Mill, SC; Susan Mantie and her fiancé, Rob Paul of Cromwell and Jay “Bill” Mantie and his wife, Marijane of Chester; 6 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; many nephews and nieces, all whom she loved and enjoyed.

Along with her husband and parents, Burnice was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Ralph Hawley.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 12 at 10:00 am at Third Congregational Church. Burial will follow in Miner Cemetery.

Family and friends may call on Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church Street, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, donations in Burnice’s memory may be made to Third Congregational Church, 94 Miner Street, Middletown, CT 06457.
